Your final papers, due May 1st via email, should be somewhat more
complex and research-heavy than your midterm papers. I also ask that the
papers be 8-10 pages.
For this paper, I do not ask you to respond to a prompt, but instead to
choose and explore a topic of particular interest to you. That means
that you can look at a text or issue addressed in class that you DIDN'T
explore in your midterm or transcend the boundaries of the class to
focus on comics or issues in comics about which you are passionate. I
am more than happy to respond to ideas for papers and/ or provide you
with a series of possible prompts if you like. However, you do have
freedom to pursue what you choose.
As for finding research, I'd like you to include approximately three
sources to enrich your argument (these might include peer-reviewed
articles, books on comics lit or theory, or interviews with authors). I
am also happy to help you find appropriate research for your chosen
topic. By now, you should all have received your midterms with comments.
I am happy to discuss them with you and help you figure out how to
integrate my comments into final papers. Overall, I was TRULY impressed
by the caliber of your work!
Would I be able to explore multiple types of scifi comics/graphic novels, the worlds presented and how the style of art influences their story and development?
ReplyDeleteSure, Jonathan. Email with some details so I can help you find research.
ReplyDeleteWould I be able to look at the differences in artwork like between the artwork varieties seen in the graphic novels we've read this term and the comic book art like that in Marvel comics or DC comics. The differing styles we saw over the term are a far cry more artistic than those in the comic books of Stan Lee.
ReplyDeleteThere are so many comics in Marvel that use artists whose style is far more realistic than anything we've read this semester. Look at X-Force or Superior Spiderman. Most artists go into great detail for these stories. If you want to compare styles, look at older comics or the ones simply targeted at children.
DeleteI am looking at the popular culture aspect and the earlier works, such as early Xmen or Superman. Those tend to follow the similar styles of artwork and they were the inspiration for many of our authors this term to get into art and graphic art. I'm comparing the styles.
DeleteDefinitely, Jillian. Sorry I missed this question.
ReplyDeleteWould I be able to do a paper discussing how different styles effect what readers and what kind of audience the comic would attract, as well as how style can relate to a genre such as gore and horror vs super hero's? It would be from a more artist styled perspective, but I have some interesting stuff pulled up about comic styles as a whole.
